If your using a ram ball. It's probably not an issue with the Scotty mount

agreed, its not the ball that is the problem, its the 'screwball' track connection.

Yep, its the screwball connection that is a potential problem, and only on the left side... and probably only for bigger fish species to. But I definitely wouldn't trust it on larger fish. It only has to be unscrewed slightly before the mount starts sliding in the track. Based on my off-water tests, I doubt it would be terribly hard to pull the thing right out of the track. I'm not game enough to do an on-water test

If one were to chance in on the left side, a little insurance might not be a bad idea: take a spare Screwball or Mightybolt and mount it on the end of the Geartrac. This will help to keep any runaway Screwballs from coming off the Geartrac.

I did the install last night, I dont know if I failed the handyman test or something, but putting these geartracs on was a major pain in the @$$!
More specifically, reaching into the hull and putting on the washer and nut for each bolt was the point of difficulty since I did not get the other (backing plate) mounting hardware. I ended up mounting the gear tracks on the gunnels, in parallel with the mesh pockets.

The gunnel area to the sides of the pockets might look like an ideal spot for the rails, but be aware that because of the indent of the side trays, there is very limited space to get a medium/large hand under there to fasten the washers and nyloc nuts. Perhaps the backing plate would have been easier? I dont know, I certainly don't intend to re-do this anytime soon.

This install may work for you but I'm not sure if it would be an ideal placement for me as it may have created a trade-off; the installation of the GearTracs aft of the rudder pull handle obstructs the function of the paddle/parkNPole keeper (bungee). That is why I installed mine just forward of the rudder pull handle.

For an easier install, I strongly recommend the rigging bullet and the backing plate. Watch the instructional videos on the YakAttack website and you are good to go.

I am interested in hearing how your install works out for you and if the track placement is an issue. I am sure there are ways around it if there is an issue.

I wish I had read your comments before I installed, as I ran into the same issues you mentioned :oops:
My placement of the tracks on the gunnels by the mesh pockets meant that the geartracs were partially obstructed by the paddle-holder bungee cables. Fortunately for me, I hadn't planned to put many accessories on those rails and the forward placement of GPS and rodholder were far enough forward that the bungee was not an issue.
Experimentation is sometimes the best teacher, and I've certainly learnt from this installation.

On a side note: the rod holder on this narrow trac model held up well at this weekend's tournament, but I was not able to get any strikes while trolling so I cannot yet comment on the strength of the mount "under tension".
