Heading down there next week from NC with family a friend. Two of us will have our PA14s with us. Looking for suggestions on areas and types of fishing to do there from the yaks. Been several times but this is the first with the yaks. Thanks in advance.

You will have fun. I love going to Hawks Cay. On the North side of the island, there is a pristine reef that you can ride the tide to the East. When you get to the edge, you will find all kinds of action; Bonnet-head sharks, Barracuda, and Snapper.

Fish the tides at the bridges and you will find Tarpon and Jacks all day long.

Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

Mike - i'm the other guy going with JMFG. What types of baits/rigs should we be prepared with for the Tarpon and Jacks? And is there any likelihood of Tuna being anywhere nearby?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian,

I have never found Jacks to be too picky. They'll take dead shrimp or dead mullet on a 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook without blinking. I also caught a Cero Mackerel by one of the bridges back in December with dead mullet. 20lb braid with a 40lb flouro leader (24") has worked well for me.

Given you are using PA 14s, you should use a live well and get some live sardines or head out to a tower and use a sabiki to get all kinds of greenies.

I am no expert on Tarpon fishing so I'll have to defer that answer to someone who won't mislead you as bad as I would.

If you are willing to head out into deeper waters, you can find Tuna, Grouper, and King Mackerel. Just be sure to watch the Florida summer weather, it can turn fast. The standing weather forecast for every day of the summer is: Partly cloudy, high around 90, afternoon showers!

Thanks for the great info. Our time is closing in and heading down tonight. Would very happily take any other info anyone else has to offer.
