Post subject:  Best Fish finder
I am starting to gear up a (hopefully soon ) a pro 14. I am looking to find the best I can and buy it once. My local west marine showed me a Elite 5 unit and a Garmin unit but the kid could not answer specific questions so I knew that he was not very familiar with his product. I will be fishing the Long Island sound and need recommendations. Thanks

if you want to buy only one to last for a while my experience would point to a Humminbird Si model. The 7 series seem to work well both on the Ti and revo

I had used Garmin for years until I recently decided to go with Lowrance. In the one year I have had the Lowrance unit, it has been returned to the mfg on 3 different occassions because of warranty issues :cry:

I have used Garmin and Lowrance over the years in my kayaks and have had little issues with both. The biggest problem between both units is corrosion, since I fish mostly saltwater.

The Lowrance units I have on my yaks have performed well. I have both the Elite4 DSI and Elite5 DSI units coupled with the Lowrance transducer scupper mounts. The newer PA's are manufactured with a molded recess specifically designed for the Lowrance transducer which I wish would have appeared on my Outback. The new Outbacks and others in the Hobie line now feature this recess for Lowrance transducers.

Ive employed both Humminbird, and lowrance DSI units for the past few years.......I now use a Raymarine Dragonfly, and will never look back....

I have a Humminbird 898cSI HD on my PA-14. You can certainly get away with something smaller, but when talking split screens and multiple views and using a unit to its full capabilities, I would not go smaller than the 898. I've found the side image really helpful, especially in water I don't know very well, same for GPS and down image is much better than 2D sonar. If you're budget is not an issue, go big bird (not the yellow one).

more details on the Dragonfly please!
is it suitable for offshore fishing? good depth/bottom readings? easy to read in sunlight?
