A broom stick will also work
Just be sure that the point on the SOP is strong enough to push through oyster beds or hard bottom sand. Careful using carbon or fiberglass. It will splinter and you can end up with shrouds buried in your hands.

I have looked at stake out poles and these things can cost $70-$80. My buddy made one using 2 old graphite golf shafts, epoxing one into the other and leaving the grip on the top shaft. He says his works fine and I made 2 today. They look good to me. Anybody tried this? |

A golf club shaft doesn't seem near long enough..... At least for me fishing the skinny waters of South Florida....I've had a 5'5" Stick-it Anchor Pin and later moved on to the YakAttack 6' Park-n-Pole, but still found that I wanted/needed more length. I upgraded to the 8' P-n-P about 9 months ago and it's perfect for both staking out & poling the PA12. There's nothing wrong with DIY solutions, but in this instance, store bought was (is) the way to go (for me). |

Ace Hardware sells an eight-foot, 3/4 inch aluminum tube. Cut off one end at an angle, plug it and fill with epoxy; attach a PVC Tee and two caps with marine goop and a couple of aluminum screws... About $20 total; you could fill the tube with Great Stuff foam to reduce air volume.... works for me and for my 18-ft CC. |

When you glue the 2 shafts together, the length is 5' or a little longer. Since I have a golf grip on the upper shaft, I won't get splinters in my hand, and I don't plan on sticking in oyster beds. |

Bass Pro sells a gaff called the Heavy Hooker for $27. It's fiberglass, 6'-6" long with two EPDM foam grips. It's basically a rod blank with a hook. I cut the hook off & left about 3" of straight shank. I also removed the lower EPDM grip, sanded & wrapped the rough area with HS tubing. Shaft tapers from 1" at the butt to about 1/2" at the tip. I also added a stainless screw eye at the butt and 5' of line with a ring. Used it a couple times in sandy bottom & works good. Haven't had occaison to try oyster beds. |

I once had a heavy hooker but she cost me much more than $27!  Seriously, I may try that if my golf shafts don't work out. |
