Tips on freshwater river salmon fishing?

I hope to try for salmon from my kayak in the lower Mokelumne, San Joaquin, and Sacramento rivers of California. Any help with when, where, how, etc. appreciated.

Thanks.

Okay, I am going to pull the dunce cap firmly down around my ears, and from my stool facing the corner, respectfully ask:

Where should I spend my time fishing for salmon?

The rivers are big and I do not know where to concentrate my time. I intend to troll and backtroll, maybe try to bounce roe.

I am not looking for specific locations, just generic descriptions of better areas of rivers to try to try. For example: straight deep runs, inside or outside bends, mid-river versus bank-hugging, etc.

Can sonar be used effectively?

Thanks.

Hey Dwest. :)
I would try Isleton, Viera's resort area and /or the Rio Vista-Brannan Island-Decker Island-Sherman Island areas. Sherman Island has a nice launch area that will get you into the mix without fighting currents right off the bat. I heard the Salmon fishing has not been too good this year but you could do Stripers,Bass,Catfish, Sturgeon and Steelhead from these areas if the Salmon was no good. So bring the kitchen sink if you go. Not as many speed boats out at Sherman as there would be in the Isleton area. You could also try Steamboat Slough or Miners Slough areas if those were closer to you. For Salmon, use Big double blade Silvertron spinners or big Flat fish lures, wrapped in sardines, then toss it out and down to the bottom using bout a 2 or three oz sinker with a few feet of leader to your lure so it swims off the bottom. Then just sit there till you get a hit. 8) Did ya get your A.I. phone call yet..?
Tight lines..let us know if you do any good out there

Here's my summary outline so far:

Speed:

Slow as possible that keeps blades of lure just turning.
1.8 to 2.1 mph

Location:

Inside bends.
Holes – even if only few inches deeper
Slots where salmon swim upriver
Eddies where salmon rest

Trolling path:

Move from side to side to search for salmon. (and holes and slots)

Technique:

Keep lure within 1 foot or less of bottom
Back troll or back bounce wiggle warts

Gear:

Rod with sensitive tip to monitor “pulseâ€
