Aloha guys,

Been debating between these two units:

Lowrance Elite 4 HDI:
http://www.lowrance.com/en-US/Products/ ... en-us.aspx

versus

Garmin Echo 301dv:
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the- ... 46589.html

Anyone here have 1st hand experience between the two?

If it helps any, I typically will be using this unit to find reef structure, depth, fish activity and mark waypoints for spearfishing in Hawaii.

Thanks!

If you have a kayak that is lowrance ready, then my suggestion will be to go with the elite 4 hdi. I have one and love it. It was super easy to install on my Pa 14.

I have the elite 7 HDI, used it today for the 1st time on my PA 14, really love it. But I have no experience with the Garmin.

I have a 2012 Revo 13 so it's NOT Lowrance ready :(

Then my suggestion would be to go with whichever one you like the most. The one positive about the lowrance verses the garmin is that the lowrance has a larger screen. Personally with the waters I fish I don't use the sonar part to terribly much, I just use the chartplotter and the depth reading part so I honestly can't tell you what the actual sonar differences between the two are and which one is better.

I can't speak about the Lowrance model as I have never used one.

I did just install a Garmin unit in my Pro Angler 14. It was the 551dv instead of the 301dv you asked about. The installation was not at all difficult, I just modified the Lowrance bracket slightly with a little epoxy and then was good to go.

The Garmin unit works well and is easy to use. I would caution however, that the Garmin units do not allow marking of waypoints as far as I can tell. I know the 551dv unit does not have that functionality.

Hope this helps,
Gladdly

It doesn't look like Garmin has chart-plotter capability, so you won't be able to mark waypoints.

I have the Lowrance 4 HDI and I like it a lot. The dual image is great, but I don't use the downscan that often. I fish larger lakes so I save my tracks... it's nice to be able to go back days later and get back on key spots.
