Kayak hoist question

Does anyone use any of the kayak hoists available for storing an outback up near the ceiling? If so how is it?

I do and it's nice to get it off the floor and easier to load kayak onto the car and off when I get home. Cost 25 at Dicks or anywhere online really. The one I purchased had a capacity of 125 pounds.

I made one for my Maui. Drops onto the truck and disconnects / reconnects to the system in about 30 seconds. Second one I have done. I love the new one for how quickly I can load / unload. Nothing to adjust or tie on this one.

I looked at quite a few and decided on this one cause it is drop dead the easiest to install. Each end has to be manually lowered/raised. The Harken hoist is a single line, it did require some layout and a space considerations. Ive got the SPORT hanging and when the 2015 Outback is delivered in May, it will go right next to it. Very easy to lift, 3:1 It is made in the USA.

Any issue with deforming the hull?

My dealer stressed when buying my Outback to only ever store on its side.

I have 5 kayaks and the other 4 i store on racks but store my Hobie on the ground due to the dealers warnings.

I live in Australia so the Temp does get high over summer in the garage.

Upside down on the rails or right side up with formed cradles or wide straps works too. That is why I did mine upside down and placed the loads on crossbars at the rails. Also easy hoist off and onto my truck.

I went homemade with mine to hang 3 outbacks: 6 single blocks, manila rope, a number of screw-lock claps, and the webbing to hug the kayaks.
Pulls up pretty easily, the manila doesn't bind/curl up like the poly I used before, and the webbing cradles the Hobies with no harm, year 5 or hanging like this.

Finally got the Garage Gator installed. I plan on immediately replacing those 1" wide straps with either wider straps or flat boards or PVC protected with pool noodle.
Now I can lower right into the bed of my truck. This is the 225 pound model and my ceiling is 15'.

Late to the party on this post also, but thought I would share. I opted to copy the design of a lift I saw on youtube (KidBako) that utilized an electric winch from HF. Rather than mounting in the attic above the garage, I just mounted it to the ceiling. I went this route because of the size and weight of the PA14. Works great as you just lower to bed and slide off.

Hello, here is my solution to hanging the kayaks in the garage (I’m limited on space and needed something that went right up to the celling). The total cost for everything is around 75.00 all invested in the set up.
6 pulleys - $25.00
rope $25.00
trailer ratchet - $18.00 (clearance at acadamy)
Misc rope clamps, eye bolts, 1/4 lag screws -$7.00.

I’m extremely happy with the results, as I was tired of the kayaks being in the way and tripping on them or just having to move them around. I needed a way to store the kayaks and still have a garage to keep the cars and work on things as needed. The process to build the lift took about 4-5 hours figuring it out as went. The most challenging aspect was getting the ropes exactly the same length due to the adjustments needed to get everything level.

Here is my storage solution, pulley system with a 2X4 constructed frame with foam (Pipe Insulation) to protect the Hobie PA

I just ordered a system called "MyLifter" (I have zero affiliation) and have yet to install it. It is an electric system that is controlled by your iPhone. I went with this system because there are no lines hanging or controls for my smaller kids to accidentally untie or turn on. When I install it, I will post some pics, but you can search the net for the product. Pretty neat device and I suppose it started out as a KickStarter program.
