I'm starting to fish the ocean more often and looking for info on how to catch the fishes. I plan to stay somewhat within sight of shore, water depth is less than 50 feet. I have a Revolution so a lot of AlohaDan's techniques don't seem to apply (no green stick).

Are there lures that work well for trolling at 3 knots or is vertical jigging over the near shore reefs better?

How do you rig a dead fish as a lure such as the pre-rigged ballyhoo?

I would ask about live bait but the Hobie livewell is MIA.

Alot of what you posted is latin to me. I fish on the west coast but I bet fish don't know if they are on the east coast or west coast.

Try trolling a rapala CD 14.

If you are using a dead fish, use a double hook set up and hook it through the nose and just in front of the tail with a trap hook. To do this, slide an egg sinker on to your line up about 4' and then put a split shot on the line to keep it from sliding off your line. Attache a hook with a palomar knot and with the tag end attach another one about 6" down. Cut the remaining tag line off and use the two hooks to attach the bait. Drop the sinker to the bottom and drift. See what happens.

Good luck.

Joe, try D.O.A. shrimp and mackeral. Also try cut bait on a spoon or a waited lure.

Sometimes they work for me. If you plan do go deeper try tieing an old CD up the line away from the bait when you troll.
