Post subject:  Sail for a Mirage Classic

I picked up a used Mirage Classic for my son, but I'm truly a sailor (current owner of a Hobie Getaway) and I'd love to be able to rig a sail on the kayak. Has anyone done this successfully?

Are you asking about rigging a sail, other than the Hobie yak sail kit itself? If so, a number of folks have done this quite succssfully. However, most of us just use the Hobie sail kit that works quite nicely for all of the Hobie yaks with a mast step. Here's my OB rigged and ready to go.

Unfortunately the Mirage Classic doesn't have a mast step; hence my question.

I'll be looking at the new Mirage Adventure, but I hear it's fairly expensive, so I may have to wait a bit...

Right--not as easy without the built-in mast step, but it can still be done. There are some really excellent sailors on the KFS (Kayak Fishing Stuff) Kayak Sailiing Forum, and some of them have been experimenting with various types of sails, including sailboard sails, for the Hobie yaks. Check these out at the KFS forum:

Probably my favorite is Punchinello's rig for a Hobie Sport. including a bowsprit, jib, and custom-made outrigger.
