Been sailing a few times now with my Oasis and love it. I have a furling mechanism, boom batten, and the main sheet running forward to a second microblock and then snatch cleat :?: . Its the simple thing thats giving me a problem. I have a Harken 224 microblock for the mainsheet attached to the read padeye (where the Tee handle is attached). Whether I have the mainsheet coming around the sheave from the top or from the bottom, the forward screw head of the padeye begins to catch the sheet and begins to work like a snatch block - not a good situation. I see that the Harken 234 block with shackle has also been used and I guess that I could just add a separate shackle into the system, but that changes the orientation of the block from up and down to sideways. Somehow that doesnt seem like it would let the sheet cross over midline well.

Am I missing something here?

Any pictures out there of an Oasis rear block rigging that works smoothly?

Many thanks to all!!

Ron

Picah,
A twisted shackle could help with the orientation. :)

This is a great question as I have noticed the exact same situation with my rear pad eye. I have been tempted to use a swivel block on the rear pad eye, but everyone says this is a bad idea. I'm still a little fuzzy as to exactly why though.

The twisted shackle looks like a solution.

Skadar:

Thanks for your input - I'm feeling less potentially crazy as at least one other person has seen the same problem!
I believe the the problem with the swivel block is that if it turns over it could effectively lock the sheet and you would have not control over the sail - a very bad thing.

I am going to try the twisted shackle idea as soon as I am able

Good sailing

You can use a swivel block but you have to be very careful to get all the twist out of your sheet first. As picah cautions, the sheet will bind if it wraps around itself once you're out sailing and you wouldn't be able to release the sail or reach the block to clear the line. Good recipe for a capsize.

I am going to try the twisted shackle as well. What size works best for the 224 block?
