Upon looking over my new Adventure gear, I like everything I see except for the mast. It's a clunky heavy two-piece metal affair. I'd like to have a carbon fiber mast instead, perhaps with a foam core for extra flotation.

Has anyone replaced the mast on their Adventure?

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself here...after all, I haven't even taken my Adventure out yet...but the mast does seem to be second-rate kit.

Know what you mean but it works great. It’s not necessary to even tape it as the tip suggested. I assume that its aluminum to keep the cost down. Try it you’ll like it.

Yeah, I just need to get out and get sailing. The water is still too cold here for capsizing, so I can't take it out yet. Next spring, after I have a bunch of experience with the kayak, I'll sure have it out this early.

You could try a drysuit.

You would have a hard time capsizing a kayak with the sail in wind less than 10 mph.

Good Luck

I agree with OR--the Hobie mast is actually a very functional and sturdy piece of gear. I see no point in replacing it, since it works very well as is. However, I do tape mine, although it works fine without it. Just my $.02.

I have it on good authority that the mast will change soon. It will have a bungee inside like a tent pole so no tape required. I quit taping my mast because the glue was getting to be a pain in the ….

 You got to admire Dick because he has been at it a LOT longer than me and still perseveres. 8)
