Once I get my Adventure set up with outriggers, I am going to look into rigging some kind of small mizzen sail in the back. That way, if the waves are a little rough and I want to take a break from paddling, sailing or steering, I could heave-to by deploying just the mizzen sail, and the kayak would stay pointed into the weather very well. Then I could fiddle around fixing lunch and whatnot on the water. I could even deploy a sea anchor from the bow to slow down drift.

Anybody out there put a mizzen on a Hobie yet? Pictures?

Nope--not that I have ever heard about. You would probaably be the first! Securing the mizzen mast might be a bit difficult, but you might be able to rig it using the aft rodholders with a brace between them. How about a mizzen staysail for starters?? Should be an interesting project--I like it!

Apalach..good idea. A staysail would be easier to handle from the seat of the kayak. Ideally, it would be great to have a jib also for a balanced rig, but the jib would be difficult to handle from the seat. With small jib and mizzen sails, a person could sail in heavier wind. But I'd start with a mizzen because of its practicality.

Of course I have to get used to sailing the thing first before I start tinkering. It's going to be a great summer.
