When I am sailing with a strong breeze coming from my port side. I am not talking about a gale. I usually sail in a harbor. When there is an occasional white cap, it pops up. According to my dealer since I have a 2007 boat, the retro-fit will not work. Has anyone put the rudder retrofit on a 2007 boat? I have tried the thumb screw. Unfortunately, it is so hard to turn that I cannot get it to engage in the hole. So I used a metal thumb screw instead. There is no problem in screwing it in. However, the rudder pops up anyway in a strong breeze. Any suggestions? If I drill right through the rudder and put the screw all the way through I run the risk of damaging the rudder. Will the gray sheer pin break before the rudder does if I put the screw all the way through the rudder? |

I think what you need to do is install the pull string handle kit - this will have a more positive locking feature - the new 2011 style TI rudder is not adaptable - only the pull string kit is - this is something a dealer can help you with, but basically what you need to do is have the rudder locked down. |

I recently bought an older model AI and am awaiting the pull string handle kit. In the mean time, I am wondering why an adapter plate can't be made by Hobie that bolts on and fits the couture's around and below the original transom, forming a taller transom, or something extending even beyond it incorporating the original transom as an additional attachment point forming the later model transom dimensions that would accept the new up down rudder that everybody likes? Certainly this could be made strong enough that the rudder pin is the first to go in any collision. It sure would be nice to be able to fit the new rudder kit to older AIs. Even if this had to be marketed as an accessory, I, as a second owner, would have no problem paying for the plate and the rudder to have better performance. |

The new rudder design was intended only for the Tandem Island - that is the boat that had issues with steering being overcome from force due to the 90sq ft of sail area. The Single Island only has 57 sq ft and the standard rudder system works fine. (when used with the locking cleat to hold it down) - most complaints were from users who didn't lock it down - once they had the string upgrade and locked it down it works flawlessly. The new TI rudder system was adapted to the Single Islands when we re-designed the transom of the hull to accommodate the gudgeon, so now it has this rudder - but honestly on an AI, it's really overkill... The older system functions good on earlier AI's too. |
