Post subject:  Alternative sail for the Adventure...

Hi chaps,

I'm new to the site, and planning to get an Adventure soon. After trying out some Hobies one thing occured to me that I haven't seen discussed on here.

It seemed to me that the sail package was designed for the older yak models that didn't have the daggerboard or larger rudder. It's a small 20 sq.ft. sail so that they won't tip over easily. But the new Adventure with all the mods (turbofins, etc.) is much less tippy and seems to be crying out for a larger sail. The 57 sq.ft. sail for the Island might be too big to use without the amas, has anyone tried that yet? Alas, it seems Hobie has no intermediate-sized sail.

I wonder about the possibility of fitting a BSD Batwing - they have 32 and 36 sq.ft. sails that I think would be perfect. Has anyone tried this?

And what is the diameter of a Hobie mast? I want to compare to the Batwing mast to see if they will fit the same hole.

Can't wait to own my own, whatever the sail.

Regards,

Edd

I'm on the road, but IIRC the diameter is 7/8"

Thanks for the info. BSD says their sails use 1.3 - 1.5" dia. masts, so I guess they won't fit a Hobie hole.

I'm wondering about the sail for the Island, though. Has Hobie really put a 57 sq. ft. sail on a 7/8" dia. mast? That sounds too narrow to be strong enough. Anybody have any experience with it yet?

The Island has a new mast setup. It's self furling also.

Don't know the exact new diameter. But you cannot (per Matt Miller) retrofit an older Adventure model. You will need the new one.

The details are burried in one of the Island threads. BUT I have a bad case of CRS.

Thanks for answering my questions, I appreciate it.

A lot of posters seem very excited about the new Island. But I would hate to give up simply paddling as a kayak. Do we know if the outriggers will be completely removable as well as retractable? It would be nice to use as a regular kayak when you want to.

My other issue is with the colour, because I really want a white one, and they're only offering Islands in yellow and red. I guess I'd have to get a regular '07 Adventure and then upgrade it. I thought the white inflatable amas would look better with a white kayak anyway, but I would really like that bigger sail.

EddTheBrit - We took delivery of two Adventures about 2 weeks before the Island was announced. Of course I temporarily had buyers remorse, wishing I had waited, however, after giving it much thought and inquiring with Hobie about the possibility of upgrading my new Adventures (not an option), I realize I would have made the same choice today.

As a long time sailor, who still loves to sail, I prefer the simplicity of the Adventure over the Island. My wife and I are delighted with our Adventures. Of course, we added the sail kit and dagger board. Having owned and sailed boats ranging from 12-35 feet, I can really appreciate the fact that, with the kayaks, there is virtually no rigging time, no frustration about the lack of wind, or excessive wind. I also enjoy exploring shallow water and shorelines, something that doesn't work well with a sail boat. The Adventure is perfect if you want to primarily kayak and sail when the conditions are right. With more time in my life, I would definatley add a sail boat to the family fleet. For us, Bravo or Getaway would be better much better than two Islands (two would be a handful on the car and getting to the water). The Island is definately a single handed sailing craft.

Of course, we all use our boats differently and I can see why many would be so enthused with the Island for fishing and single handed exploring.

Best Regards.
Randy

PS We like the white hull too (much cooler in a hot climate).

Punchinello on the various Hobie forums has fitted various sails, including medium sized windsurfing sails. You can bolt a mast hole just behind the front hatch. Although longer, the Adventure will lean easily to the side, so the base sail is enough. Add the Sidekick outriggers, though, and you can use more sail with any of these yaks. The real advantage of the Adventure is the daggerboard placed well back from sail mast, which will allow more stable sailing. The outriggers and tubes on the Adventure Island are removable, so you can still use it as a normal kayak; and they included both the new and old mast holes, so you can still use the old sail kit with the AI. Hope this info helps.
