Hi guys,

I stumbled across this mod to the mounting point of the rear AKA crossbar (see the "Rear Plates" heading, half-way down):

It seems like a good little modification.

I was curious, so I went and measured the distance between the front and rear AKA on my 2011 A.I. and noticed that at the AMA, the distance was 1540mm, but at the hull-mounted crossbars, the distance was only 1510mm. I guess that moving the rear mounts back about 30mm will make the AKAS exactly parallel to each other.

Can anyone see any issues or problems that this mod could cause (other than to the warranty!)?

I was quiet surprised with the 30mm difference between the AKAS at the hull and at the AMAS. I guess that means that the AKAS aren't parallel to each other when deployed.

Is there some technical reason for this?

I've measured mine and the Amas are not parallel to each other when deployed. However, you never have more than one in the water at a time (unless you're very heavily loaded) so any difference is halved by its relation to the hull, where it is also not parallel.

Thought maybe it was designed this way on purpose, sort of like toe-in (or in this case, toe-out) on a car's front end. But I really have no idea. I guess Hobie would have to provide that information. The boat seems to track and sail just fine, at least within whatever precision I'm able to discern by the seat of my pants.

Not sure of any design reason for that. Sometimes hulls are slightly toe-in for better tracking. The Hobie 16 can not be measured for parallel for example.

I do know that boats vary in length, the akas, mounting points... are not 100% consistent due to plastic shrink issues. Varies by color, thickness. I'll ask is there was a reason. I do think moving the mount aft could induce a bit of stress on the mounting point. Maybe...
