While out fishing today the wind FINALLY came up so Sidekick was put to good use. Just fooling around I would manually hold the sheet out over the ama. You can spread the sail pretty wide. What about glueing some guides to the top of the yaku right above the ama so you just slip the sheet over it? Note this is not a cleat, the sheet still runs. |

Sounds like a great idea! Some sort of open fairlead or hook or S link out near the end of the crossbar? If you have the '06 West Marine catalog, look at the tack hook on pg. 891 under sailboat hardware, mainsail controls. Something you can release quickly. Let us know what you come up with!

What impact on sailing does tightning the adjustment screw on the turbo fins? It would seem that the fins would twist off less and gain a little better pointing. |

Hi Jim and welcome to the forum. Your logic sounds good and in a sailing race it could make a difference. From a mixed use standpoint though, where sailing and peddling go hand in hand, you may have a better overall gain from maximizing peddling performance. The potential reduction in side slip is probably minimal. The more I sail, the more I tend to supplement with fins, especially in light air or when wanting to point upwind more than sailing alone would permit, or when just using the sail to help maximize range. So I want my fins tuned to the maximum for peddling efficiency. Once there, I am reluctant to adjust them too much. But it depends a lot on your activities. It's certainly worth a try -- there is no better way to find out for sure. If you try it, please post the results!8) |
