I'm new here, but just wondering if anyone has sailed an Outfitter or Tandem using Mirage drive fins in back while utilizing a centerboard up front? Might it be a benefit to tandem Hobie kayak sailing. And if so, has Hobie considered making a centerboard accessory to fit the Mirage drive hole? Looking forward to and thanking you in advance for your thoughts.

Hi KBH and welcome to the forum.

Generally speaking, the centerboard should be located near the "center of effort" of the sail when close hauled.. With the sail mounted just behind the front seat, that would put the centerboard in the back cockpit about 12 to 18 inches behind the mast. Placing the centerboard ahead of the sail would make the rig very hard to control!

So, while a centerboard in the rear drive well would work, you wouldn't want to give up your fins! A good compromise is Turbofins in the back. They make an acceptable substitute for a centerboard and pedal as well! 8)

Thanks for your input. The turbo fins in back are a great idea.

It would then seem logical if it fits, that behinid the sail and in front of the rear pedals would be the Outfitter's location of choice for the Sidekick amas to go as well. Is this where folks are putting them on the Outfitter? kbh
