Hey all. I recently bought my dream Revolution 11. I kayak on Lake Lanier outside Atlanta. I have used the boat almost daily since I bought it! Love it! I found a sailkit on Craigslist and picked it up for half the price of a new one the other day. I feel I need Outriggers or Amas since I have no sailing experience and I'm not comfortable in my abilities. I am torn between the inflatable Amas Hobie sells, and the CastleCraft stabilizers. I like the reduced cost of the Hobie system but wanted the opinions of the "elders" on here....what say you? Also do you recommend the DIY PVC furler I have read about or should I just splurge and go Hobie furler? Thanks! :wink:

As for stabilizers, the Hobie inflatables work fine, best budget decision.
I had a chance at some financial assistance on the purchase of the SpringCreek stabilizers, so I went with those instead. :wink:

Noted. Guess the Hobie Furler wins out. What are your thoughts on the Spring Creek? Are they worth the expense?

I used to run the spring creek stabilizers and did like them if I was going sailing or just going far out. The only negative would be the weight vs the Hobie stabilizers.

Once I installed my furling device, a few Blocks & cam cleat - I found that I didn't really need outriggers unless the wind forecast was greater than 10mph sustained. With that said, my recommendation would be to invest your time in the furling set up (with blocks & cleat)- try it out & then decide on the outriggers.

FYI for those that enjoy sailing the Hobies:

I recently fabbed and installed a centerboard to replace the mirage drive:

It seems to point to weather much better than using the Mirage drive! And snaps right into the drive's mounting:

If it looks familiar, it is an old ABS rudder from a Hobie 16.

I cannot see the pictures, I'd like to see that mod you did because I was thinking of doing something similar.
I always end up pedaling though; its rare when there is enough wind (without large waves) to sail without mirage assistance.

I sail my Rev 11 and use Hobies inflatable outriggers..really like them and would not consider sailing without them..you will have to get the sailing rudder as the stock one will be over powered in strong winds..the furler on the 11 will work but needs some jury rigging. Enjoy it's a fun yak.

I sailed a 16 for a decade, and really miss it. No money or room for the Islander, so I have been enjoying the Revo 11 under sail. I won't touch the peddles or paddle the whole time I am sailing....... (think Chris Cross song...)

I wish someone would post an idiots guide for installation of the furler on the Revo 11! I posted this request in another thread but didn't get any bites. I'm ready to order my furler but I don't wanna mess up the install.....

wthoms2000, I see the pics now. nice solution! How far does this centerboard extend below the hull?

Brody, I'll see what I can do this weekend to make a walkthrough. Its pretty easy though and you shouldn't let that hold up your purchase. Once you have all the pieces in hand and look at your kayak it will seem fairly straightforward.

Now that's a centreboard! Great work.
As well as improving pointing, heeling should be slowed making for a more stable sail. 8)
The only negative I see is hitting something while underway. That's a lot of leverage on the drivewell ledge with a board that long.

The centerboard/rudder is 9" wide and 19"below the hull.
