Finished AI amas, trampolines and twin sails on 2008 Oasis

Hi guys,

The admiral (aka the wife) just finished her first sail of the Oasis kayak with the AI amas, twin sail rig, and blue trampolines. Everything went very well. All that is left to do install some fairleads and cam cleats for the sheets and furling lines. Here are some photos. my personal preference is CLAM cleats rather than CAM cleats for belaying lines - they are much smaller and have no moving parts : much less obtrusive on a kayak.

That is a very clever mod EJ.

I am doing a simaler install.
How high do the ama's sit in relation to the Oasis hull when sitting on a level surface.
Pictures I see of the A1s show them a bit off of level with the hull. I do not have any
A1 cross bars to set an angle from.
Right now I have one ama and a couple Akas. Need to find one more Papaya A1 ama and
A front aka.

Hi jim,

The keel of the AI amas are approx 6 inches higher than the keel of the Vaka (main hull). On the oasis, this is the perfect height because the amas are barely out of the water when the kayak is under way on her designed waterline. So, the kayak glides very smoothly.

What kayak do you have?

I have a 2014 Oasis.
I have it part way set up, I guessed at 5 inches higher than the hull so I was not to far off.
I made it adjustable though so I can move it up or down if needed.
I have made the twin sail setup already and have been using it. Just got back from a month in the keys and sailed it a lot. Did help the low wind speed performance. May change to a larger single
sail and see how that works.
I am making all my own cross bars, brackets etc to fit the A1 AKAs.
Still need one papaya A1 AMA to finish it up.

I'd love to see photos of your mods, especially of how you mounted your front sail. You mentioned changing to a larger single sail: what design of rigging do you have in mind?

Your custom crossbars look very slick. How do you keep the crossbar from rotating inside the pillow block bearings?

Those are not pillow blocks, I machined them from solid plastic [starboard] there is a 1/4 20
screw that's tapped into the aluminum tube that secures them. The AKA bracket is adjustable, it
is fastened now in one place. If I find it does not work right I can rotate the bracket up or down and
drill a new hole. Working on the rear cross bar now, it will have an offset so I do not block my rear
storage area.
Picked up a broken carbon fiber Ti mast. Going to shorten it and make a plastic bearing support
for the mast simaler to the Ai and Ti roller setup. I have a bigger sail, maybe 45 so ft that I use
on and old Foldbot kayak. Going to retrofit it to the Hobie and give it a try.
The twin smaller Hobie kayak sails are Ok but I think a larger single sail will work well too.

I'd love to see photos of the offset rear bracket when you're done fabricating it.

Are those geartrac tracks? Are they thru bolted with backing plates? If so, how did you tighten the nuts inside the hull?

Backing plates are aluminum flat bar 1/4 thick with tapped holes.
Rear ones will be installed the same way.
Will get pics when I finish the offset rear crossbar. Waiting for the gear tracks to arrive.
