What is the plastic hook located on the tack of the sail? Is it used to help reef the sail? The main sheet is attached to the back of the sail, but there is a plastic hook sewn to the sail just above that.

In theory, it's used to help keep the sail rolled around the mast when you aren't sailing. But you do have to unstep the mast first. There's should be a knot in your sheet a few inches from the clew. That knot catches in the hook.
