Post subject:  Tiller Problem - Pins stick up too high

Does anyone know what might be going on here. I just bought a Hobie 20 and the pins that the tiller bar sits on stick up way to high. They are portruding from the bar by about an inch. These threaded pins are only only threaded so far, preventing them from screwing further down into each tiller. Consequently, they protrude up. Does anyone know how to fix this? Has this every happend to anyone else? Please let me know if you have any thoughts. :?:

Not sure what is going on there - you can buy just the threaded post 40530001 if you wanted to - it should thread down to the bottom of the end fitting - here is a picture of the post and how it should look.

( http://static.hobiecat.com/2010_archive/support/pdfs/PARTS_20.pdf ) page two of this PDF will show you the assembly

If so, I have a picture of this problem.

Post subject:  Possible Reason

I am being told there was only one type of pin made for this assembly. The hole at the bottom is threaded, but not at the top. This means the hole at the top is probably slightly wider to allow the non-threaded portion of the pin to fit. If the pin was put in upside down (non-threaded portion first) it may slip through the first hole, but not through the second, causing it to protrude. This is the theory anyway.

Does this sound correct?

My guess would be that pin was installed into the tiller arm end cap from the wrong side. Flip the end cap over and look in the opposite side of pin hole- the bottom of the pin should be flush or nearly flush with the bottom of the end cap.

Post subject:  Flipping the pin over fixed one of them

I was able to fix one of these by flipping the pin over. The alluminum end cap was fixed in this manner, but the black one, which is on the other side of my boat, just can be fixed. Any thoughts? The prior owner must have swaped one of these end caps out at one point, but all of the Hobie tiler pins are the same, so I don't know why this won't fit.
