Cool! the first draft looks like the "stars and stripes" scheme that i see on this Hobie 21SE at the lake all the time. Well done

Thanks for the assist. I'll have to brush up on my image posting skills.

No problem - it was a simple fix.

Your link was "http://api.ning.com/files/s5z5ptuQ9YCUr1jBWniCUuyFpfo0VDULTiv5ILwQ4GA_/MVDsSailDesignsJPEG.jpg?width=737&height=552"

The reason the forum software didn't like it was the size specification at the end ("?width=737&height=552"). I just took your link (minus the size spec) and put it between a pair of [img] tags.

If you're posting pictures, the last part of the picture URL has to be the file extension of the photo (.jpg, .bmp, or .gif) or else it won't work.

Hey congrats on your sail order! You must be excited! Hard to get sleep I bet!

I called Chip a couple of days ago to talk about some sails for another boat of mine, not my H20, and while I was on the phone with him the order for your sails came in from Hobie.

So Chip will be building your sails after all! That being said, you'll witness first hand the high quality you get from his loft.

Hobie trusts him! There's a reason why.

Wes,

Thanks for the update. What I get from your post is that Hobie is contracting Whirlwind to build their H20 sails. I'm glad that during the course of these discussions I never dissed Whirlwind. My emphasis was on class legality. I suppose that since my order was placed through Hobie I shouldn't have any issues with them being class legal.

Nevertheless, I still don't think that a squaretop is a good idea on a H20, regardless of who builds it, due to issues with class legality. Again, why eliminate yourself, or the next buyer of your boat, from class racing?

Matt, am I connecting the dots right regarding class legality of Hobie contracted Whirlwind H20 sails?

MVD

Absolutely. Your sail will come with a "Hobie Sails" sailmaker patch that is your proof of class legality. Hobie Cat provides Whirlwind with the CNC info, so the sail panels are cut out to the exact class approved patterns.

The reason Hobie Cat subs out the H-20 sails is that they are a unique, low volume product that doesn't fit well into their sail loft production schedule.

Yes, they will absolutely be class legal.

Also, I wouldn't even order a ST main for my H20 if I didn't already have class sails to go with it when I sold it. ST's for the 20's are just for fun!! If I were JUST replacing a worn out suit of sails for my H20 I would go OEM, for obvious reasons.

enjoy those babies when you get them

Hey Bill, not sure if your H21SE sails would be a Chip project, although i don't think so.

I think I may have misunderstood your question on your recent post Bill. Let me clarify my response. What I meant to say was -that if you order your "stars and stripes" sails FROM Hobie, I"m not sure if they would contract Chip for the build. However, if you have no interest in class sails or if it doesn't matter to you whether or not there are Hobie patches on your sails, it is highly probable that you would save some money going through Chip @ Whirlwind for your "Stars and Stripes".

I must say, all the fore mentioned ideas on this forum topic apply to your situation as well. I'm not sure if there is as quit a strong class racing fellowship with the H21 though. Not worth the money saved on the purchase of after market sails if your going to sell your boat in a couple of years and if the resale discount you would have to give on your vessel to the next "class racer buyer" adds up to more than you saved originally on the new sails. NOW...IF you are 1). not a class racer 2). "keeping this baby for a while" 3). want to save some cash - than it's a no brainer! Just all depends!

The Hobie 21 Class Rules allow non-OEM sails, so you can get any sailmaker to make them, as long as they meet the offset measurements in the class rules.
Quote:
5.5 Third sails of open design may be carried on
board and used on any point of sail. Fittings and
equipment to fly the sail are the owner's and designer's
choice. The following limitations apply
to the third sail design:
a) The open design sail cannot be attached to
the mast above 28 ft. (8.53 meters) measured
from the bottom of the mast extrusion.
b) Fittings and equipment for sheeting the open
sails must be attached to or mounted on existing
aluminium extrusion.
c) A maximum of two open sails may be carried
on board at an event and shall not be
replaced during a race or regatta unless
damaged and no longer usable. Race
Committee approval for a replacement sail
must be received prior to sail use.
d) A maximum of two open sails may be registered
and identified before the start of each
event. A Race Committee member's signature
on the sail is acceptable identification.
e) A spinnaker pole no longer than the distance
from the center line of the front crossbar to
either bow may be used to fly the open
sails. Rigging is of open design.
f) No more that one open sail may be flown at
any one time.
g) Third sail parameters are:
Maximum luff 30 ft. (9.15 meters)
Maximum foot 20 ft. (6.1 meters)
Minimum S.M.G. 13 ft. (3.96 meters)
IHCA Rule Book 2009-2012 rev. 091001 Page 31
h) Registered open sail(s) may or may not be
carried on board during each race of an
event.

I had Salty Dog build my replacement main years ago and Randy Smyth make my jib(which he actually fabed a mirror image of my jib,so I had to modify my drum just to roll it up) and Salty Dog also made my storm jib which I need every now and then.My spinaker is an original Prosail and in fine shape.
I would like just another fun sail to kind of match my original Stars and Stripes, maybe even a square top?My kids and I like long distance sailing and enjoying different sailing places. We really don't come across other 21 SE to "race" against but meet many new friends that just enjoy sailing. My replacement sails are in great shape. If anything a new spinaker with a pole would be nice or some other forward sail?A reacher?Maybe something that rolls up?Some simple.........but fast.
