Post subject:  Boat set up
What do you guys think? Rake, no rake. Also, how tight should the rig be in 15-20 kt winds. Also, what do you like for Diamond wire tension in that type of wind.
What I am really looking for is how to set up the boat so its pretty close to where it should be for all types (except super light and super heavy)
Oh yea, how tight should you pull the jib down?? That is one thing I have never read about anywhere.

Bob Curry (World Champion sailor) wrote a tuning guide for the 20 a few years ago. It should all be in there. His text is included in the assembly manual at the back.

:P you missed a great H20 guest expert program in Little Rock, AR in May. John Tomco and his wife past National H20 Champions put on a great clinic. As I remember mast rake about 12" back on your rudder, diamond wires at about 450 to 550 , and rig tight but will still let the rotator turn the mast to about 110 degrees with out any help but your rotator system.

I am hoping to just not get dead last. If that happens, I have beat the odds. Oh yea, laped is bad too. I don't want to get laped. That would really suck. Uh, tipping over on the finish/start line. That would be bad too. If I don't do any of those things, I'll be happy. OOpps. Hit someone, I know I don't want to do that either. And there is the 'falling off the boat when hooking up' thing too........For sure don't want to do that.
Pitchpolling around A mark. That is not a good thing either..... :roll:

Since the original topic was Hobie 20 boat setup, here is what I would do if the Tomko's show up. Find some 1000lb clear test line, tie one end to the dead eye on his rear crossbar.8) Take the other end and hook it to both of your bridles forming a "V" creating an invisible tow rope. :D This way he will never get out of your sights. When approaching the finish line, just yank on the test line causing his momentum to slow, turn slightly to port to go around him, all the while continuing to keep a firm grip on the test line. :twisted:

I have attempted this at numerous regattas, but Tiffany (his wife and crew) always seems to catch me. :oops:

Don't sweat it, you guys will do great.

the other thing we did not discuss was spreader rake. How much depends on total crew weight. Let me know what yous is and I will work something out for you. I have your same goals for nationals so I will split the cost of the 1000lb test line and you can latch on the Tomko's and I will latch on to Phil and Bex Collins :lol: :lol:

I was going to suggest that if you get caught by Tiffany, then latch on to the Collins' boat! :D They both should be running neck and neck. :P

Chris, Just got home. Well we made it through nationals and neither of us finished last. Man did we have fun racing with and against you. Nancy and I are already looking forward to next year. I'm shooting for a few more top ten finishes and ending up in the middle of the pack and will look for you right there also.
Wow did you look at the final results 10 of the top 20 boats are from Div 14. Had a great time Chris your guys in Div 7 did a great job.

Looks as though as everyone was hooking up the lines to the fastest boats in the land they did a great job if keeping Phil and Bev Collins as well as John and Tiffany Tomko back while letting George Pedrick and Gene Harris pass them. Guess someone better get some more line.
