Ok, so I'm reading the NOR for the Hogs Breath Australian National Championships (I now, too much time on my hands or maybe it's the time of year? You guys really need to post more) and I see the alteration of Class rule for 20's raising the minimum crew weight to 145kg's. Whaa? According to my calculator that's 319 pounds! Anyone know why?

The Australian National HCA has a BB similar to this one at http://www.hobiecat.asn.au/bb/

You can ask them yourself - they're pretty nice people.

I went ahead and did it for you, since I'm curious too.

I suspect it has to do with the wind they get in Western OZ.

What we call nuclear, they consider a light breeze.

And the answer is . . .
Quote:
. . . thinking back . . . when I sailed H20's . . . I think I was 6'4" tall & weighed 150 !!!!

The first year 20's were in Oz we changed the weight . . . basically to stop an exodus from 18's.
With the small population we draw from . . . it was thought to be the best thing to do!

We still have a relatively competitive fleet of 18's . . . but haven't had an H20 Nationals for several years now.

Wouldn't mind some snow right now . . . stinking hot outside here in the mountains!!!

Thanks for asking Matt. The au site is well...definitely more matter of fact.

You know you're probably right that this big old boat would be much easier to handle at total weights closer to 319, so I'm encouraging all the Div 7 & 14 (nuclear area) sailors to just let yourself go this Holiday and rest of the Winter for that matter, put on a few pounds. You need to keep those boats flat!

Oh you bet Chris, think keep it flat.

There's always plenty of extra goodies to eat this time of year which messes up normal eating patterns so it should be easy to continue those habits in '06, with may I suggest, corn fed Iowa beef chased with lots of beer. And in your position you can make an edict amongst all Div 7 sailors to gain 10% in body weight.

dammit Tom, we had 'em going!!

I took a pretty big hit over the holidays, weight wise, so have some "work" to do. Trying to coerse the wifal unit out of retirement (125 lbs), she likes the looks of the 20.

Chris, you keep "working" on those steaks and beers.

Well, Tom is JUST as fat as me, so If I get my a## on a treadmill, I'll at least have that on him. He's just a whole lot better down wind than me. I'll have to work on that.
