Is the Hobie 20 mast cross section same as Tiger and H-17?

Thx,

No.

Matt M. told me a while ago that the extrusion die for the 20 mast broke and Hobie Cat has no plans to replace it - there's just no economic reason to do it for the couple of masts a year they would sell.

Take care of your mast. I don't think they're any stock left at the factory.

We would use a Getaway extrusion for any 17 or 20 masts now. Same external profile. Thicker side walls.

Same external profile + thicker wall means the internal profile is different (smaller internal dimensions). Will the 17 and 20 comptips and mast bases fit in the getaway extrusion?

Matt M. - roughly how much more would the Getaway mast weigh than a standard H20 mast? Not complaining, I'm just glad there is an alternative. Anxious to hear the answer to the comptip question.

Great info... I was actually also interested in if a H-17 mast base would fit a H-20 mast?

Bases and CompTips would have to be filed to fit for sure.

Not sure of the weight difference.

Slightly related: I'm about to weld a 1" DIA aluminum mount to the front of my Getaway mast, about 5 FT from the base (this is for a nav light mount).

Does anyone know of any issues/potential risks?

Thanks,

Rick S

Yea. You're going to ruin the heat treatment of the aluminum in the heat affected zone of the weld. This will significantly weaken the mast by changing it from 6061-T6 to just 6061 aluminum alloy. Additionally, the black anodize will be ruined by the welding. I'd recommend you use pop rivets instead.
