yeah when we bought our 20 we didn't even have rings...we had bolin loops. the block work a lot better

Hey Folks, My friend and are getting the "20" ready for another season on Vermont's Lake Champlain. We've noticed there appears to be a new Barber Hauler setup in some of the assembly manuals we've seen on the web. For the new setup, the rings on the end of the barber hauler lines are replaced with a block w/beckett. Question is, which block is recommended? If we continue to use a 5/16 jib sheet, the Harken 083 (small bullet, 3/8 line max) seems like it may be a tad small (worried about friction). The other option is the 167 which is the same size, but has a swivel which seems like it may be a good way to prevent a tangle. Finally the 126 (big bullet, 7/16 line) should allow 5/16 line should run smooth, but may be a tad big. Thoughts? Many thanks. Dan Simmons Hobie 20 Mallets Bay Lake Champlain, Vermont |

The smaller block and line is the way to go. You may find the block binds up a little still, but under load it works better than rings. The real friction is the turning block, but that is a whole seperate issue. You can also modify the smaller block by removing the plastic between the sheve and the stainless hoop... ... this will help to eliminate some of the binding potential. |

Thanks much for the reply....I was worried that I wasn't going to hear from anyone. One question. when you refer to the real friction being the turning block, what does this mean? Are you saying that it's better to use a block with a swivel? Thanks. Dan |

I don't use the swivel, the line seems to allow twist alone. The turning block is either mounted on the front crossbar or as on my old boat, through the end of the crossbar. I changed the stock setup from a deadeye to a deck plate block, but the line still drags around the end of the crossbar. The block on top of the crossbar is better for function, but the block and padeye are bruise generators. It is a tradeoff. None of the systems I have seen are great. |

Well, it's been a slow start to the season here in VT. The rain just keeps falling, and the H20 has to stay on the trailer in my back yard. However, on Father's day my friend and I were able to hit the water for our first sail off the trailer. The new Barber Hauler control worked very well. The best part is that the job sheet can be adjusted when the barber hauler is in use. Highly recommended update for the H20 over the original rings. Many thanks for the advice. Dan in VT |
