Hi, I've been a very long time Hobie sailor, but new on this forum. I need to move my boat in spring, but don't have a trailer. Also can't find one in the area to borrow. However, I do have a buddy with a very large flatbed trailer. So I'm thinking of disconnecting the main booms from the hulls and transporting it in pieces. Something I've never done. Is it as simple as pulling the main bolts? If not, are there instructions around on the process? Thanks for all the help. Olaf, Toronto |

You have to remove the vertical bolts (4) on the front crossbar (after you remove the tramp and rudder system). You also have to remove the two outboard vertical bolts on the rear crossbar and the four horizontal inboard bolts on the rear crossbar (reach in through the access port at the stern). One thing to consider- the bolts on the front crossbar thread into an aluminum bar that's molded into the hull. It's possible for the stainless steel bolts to become frozen into bar and there is potential to damage the bolts or the threads in the aluminum bar. As an alternative, you may consider just going out and buying a couple pieces of 4" x 4" x 8' lumber and bolting or clamping them to the flat bed to make some temporary crossbeams. Then slide the boat onto the trailer as usual. Just be sure to carpet/pad the beams really well where they contact the hulls. sm |

OK - seems straight forward. I can't find a trailer wide enough to fit well. All the rental places won't rent for "boats" and don't understand what a Catamaran is. The feedback was that 1 - can't get 3 hulls on properly.... 2 - since boats sit really high, there's a risk of falling over.... Pick your excuse.  I also considered flipping it upside down and tying the crossbars down. Then rig up some triangular support for the mast. Thanks |

If your friend's flat bed trailer has a wood deck, you could just lay two 8 foot long 4x4 beams across the trailer, screw them to the wooden deck with lag bolts, and then slide your boat on. This would probably be easier than taking the whole boat apart and you won't run the risk of stripping out the aluminum inserts for the crossbar bolts. sm |

I can vouch regarding the bolt issue. Holy #@*&^! Getting those bolts out is tough. Getting them back in without cross-threading - even harder. Galvanic corrosion is no fun. In my case I have an 18, so getting a new aluminum piece is at least an option. |
