I have heard that no two H20 Mains are made alike... and the first batch were made by the EP sail loft licensed by Hobie, and later production was made by Hobie. How can you tell the generations apart. Is this real or rumor?

The Elliot Pattison mainsails have an "EP" emblem at the tack. The Hobie mains have a "Hobie" emblem on the tack.

The Hobie luff is about 6" longer. I actually preferred the EP main because it seemed to have a lot more shape cut into the sail, but the shorter luff meant you could pull all that shape out if you wanted with the downhaul. The Hobie sail seemed to be a lot flatter and less tuneable. I'm saying this based on my experience from 10+ years ago. The new sails may be totally different now.

It seems like the 20s peaked, then tapered off and fell of a cliff a few years ago. It seems like 10 year old experience is probably current and valid. I think I've got Hobie sails then.

So what drove you back to the 18s srm?

Mostly lack of other 20s to race against. Also lack of experienced crew. The 20 fleet dried up here in the early/mid 2000's. Also, the 18 is a much easier and much more forgiving boat for less experienced crew.
