Today I was changing my setup on the forestay and I'm running into a problem.

All my standing rigging is new and purchased within the last year. These are the measured lengths of all my rigging;
Forestay (Roller Furler) length is 20' 10"
Pigtail w/swivel length is 12 3/4"
Shroud lengths are 23' 5 1/4"
Bridle Lengths are 44 1/8 "
Shroud chainplates are 7 hole w/shrouds in the 3rd hole down
Forestay chainplate is 13 holes
The jib halyard pulley is between the top of the forestay and the pigtail w/swivel

Problem is when I raise the mast the bottom of the 13 hole chainplate is about 10" from the top of the furler, according to all the specs guides I can find my rigging is all the correct length yet I can't get the chainplate to slide into the roller furler. I am able to get close by adjusting the shrouds all the way to the the top of the chainplates but if I can get it pinned I have no adjustment at all.

Does anybody have any ideas what may be wrong? I believe everything is where it should be however, I'm lost on this one.

Thanks for any help.

Tom

Shackle attachment point incorrect? Should be pinned to the bottom most hole on the tang.

Striker post set too high? Ball should be 2 15/16" from crossbar to top of ball?

Shroud twisted on the shackle?

No the shrouds are correctly positioned, the mast ball sits 2 11/16" above the crossbar and I have no twists in the shrouds or at the attachment points.

Pigtail w/swivel length is 12 3/4"

This dimension does not include the swivel.

If you are in the fourth or fifth pin position from the bottom on the shroud adjusters, how far off from getting attached to the bridle is the forestay? Are your bridle lengths correct?? Ryan

Thanks, that would explain some of it but I think the swivel is only about an inch and three quarter long. I'm literally 10" short of reaching the first hole in the roller Furler. I thought about maybe the shroud attachment points are not correct, any idea how far from the bow or stern they are supposed to be located?

I know it's a long shot but I assume it's possible.

Thanks for the help!

That is an odd one.

Did you buy rigging made by us or just use the specs? Always possible our spec is suspect I suppose. Sounds like the swivel length would make it fit. Unless your boat was modified? You would have to cut into the hull to access backing nuts to do that and add reinforcement. Can't imagine that being done. Especially if the standard rigging has worked till now.

The location though... 86 1/4" forward from the transom to the center of the attachment hole.

Take a look at the H20 assembly manual, page 6. At some point, it became standard to add a 7-hole shroud adjuster to the top section of the forestay. If your boat doesn't have this adjuster, that may be the problem.

Otherwise, measure the total length of your forestay (upper pigtail + jib halyard sheave + lower forestay + 13 hole adjuster plate). This should roughly add up to the same length as the stock non-furling forestay (listed as 22' 10-1/2" in the assembly manual and 22' 9" in the wire guide).

The other thing to check would be the height of the mast step ball off of the front crossbar. If the ball is jacked up too high (from unscrewing itself or someone adjusting the dolphin striker), then the shrouds and forestay are not going to reach because the mast tang will effectively be too high.

All of my rigging was purchased through a Hobie Dealer, I measured from the top of the pigtail to the bottom of the forestay and I have 22'. If I add a 7 hole shroud adjuster and the 13 hole chain plate I get approx 22' 11". The mast ball is 2 11/16" from the crossbar to the top of the ball. I'm going to try and raise the mast with the shroud adjuster in the mix and will let you know how it goes.

Thanks again for all the help.

Cheers!

Do you have the Jib halyard block in that mix? That would add 3 inches in forestay length too. Should be pigtail, swivel, halyard block then the lower forestay.

http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/PARTS_20_1.pdf Page "62" shows the furler setup.

Fyi... wires are measured "Pin-to-Pin".

That would be the distance between the outer-most radius surface of the pin holes or thimbles. That is the bearing surface for the load on the wire.

Yes I forgot to include the Jib Halyard block in the discussion but they are there, and I've been measuring Pin-to-Pin on all everything as well.

With the shrouds in the top hole of the adjuster, adding in a 7 hole adjuster between the bottom of the forestay and the 13 hole chainplate, I can get the chainplate into the Roller Furler at least halfway. I looked at the diagram of the parts and don't see the additional adjuster between the forestay and chainplate but I haven't looked at the assy manual yet. The only part which doesn't seem correct on the measurements is the swivel and pigtail, they are 12 3/4" total length but I went back and checked and they are the Hobie part number. It does fit now so that's good but it's just odd there is such an issue getting it to work. Next time I'm out and run into another 20 I'll have to look at the way they have it rigged up.

The 7 hole adjuster is attached at the top of the forestay. It connects to the large bow shackle that connects the shrouds to the mast tang. Download the assembly manual from this site and it will be obvious how it works, the picture in the manual is very clear.
