| Post subject: | H20 Dolphin Striker Post |
I've ordered a Dolphin Striker post for my 1999 H20 but I'm told it may be a few more weeks before I'm able to get it, if anyone has one for sale I'd be interested. Also when I removed the old post there was a sleeve inside the crossbar that stayed attached to the post. Can anyone tell me if this sleeve is part of the post or is it threaded or slipped on? This link shows a compression sleeve as a separate part no. I would imagine that it is not threaded on. If they are stuck together, hit it with PB Blast and hot soapy water and see if they come apart. http://static.hobiecat.com/digital_assets/PARTS_20_1.pdf |

The sleeve is a compression tube which is intended to prevent someone from overtightening the the dolphin striker nuts and crushing the crossbar. It is not threaded on, it just slips over the dolphin striker post. Unfortunately, the Hobie design team probably could have done a little better job with their material selection for these parts because the aluminum tube will corrode and become seized with the stainless rod. No amount of liquid wrench or PB blaster is going to get them apart - especially if the boat ever saw so much as a drop of salt water. You're better off buying a new compression tube with your new dolphin striker and giving both parts a healthy coating of Lanocote antiseize before installing. sm |

That's what I thought. Thanks for the reply maybe if I'm lucky I can get the two parts delivered at the same time. If nothing else, the bottom job is done and she's all polished up waiting on the new post to arrive. Cheers! tmason |

I just finished rebuilding my front crossbar. Cleaned the corrosion from the compression rods for the bolts that hold the crossbar to the hull. I put a new dolphin striker on with a new stainless compression tube and tons of lanocote. Put an aluminum plate riveted to the underside of the top of the cross bar to reinforce that area. Tightened the bar that supports the dolphin striker as well. How far above the top of the crossbar should the ball the mast sits on be? Ryan |

I don't have a H20 to measure, but on my 17, the top of the ball is 2-3/8" above the top of the crossbar. Both boats use the same ball/mast base setup, so I would expect the H20 to be the same. The most important thing is to make sure the mast base doesn't contact the front crossbar when raising/lowering the mast. sm |

OK, I measured mine and from the top of the crossbar to the top of the ball is 3 1/8". Is this the right height? Ryan |

Not saying right or wrong... but mine is 2 3/4'' from top of crossbar to top of ball, and I think it's gonna be a bit less shortly. How's the tension of your crossbar striker assembly? At that height I have plenty of room to raise and lower the mast. Tom |

2 15/16" is the drawing specification... top of crossbar to top of ball. |

Thanks Matt. So 3 and 1/8" is within the ball park. Should I try to lower it, really doubt an eighth inch is gonna make that much difference?? Ryan |

I had the boat out about a week ago on Tomales bay and the repaired cross bar worked well. After the bow is repaired, hope to take the boat out again soon. Ryan |
