Post subject:  Mast Track

On the way home from our last regatta the upper plastic part of the sail track was damaged. The speculation is that something on the highway must have hit and cracked the sail track. How hard is it to replace that part of the sail track? Expensive? It appears that their aren’t any fasteners that hold the sail track to the mast and it can be replaced without too much trouble. :?:

I've got a section of track that I'll sell pretty cheap. Email me if you are interested... ddbrown (at) ncsu (dot) edu
I'll also give you the info on how to replace it (it is very simple).

Take a close look at the photo enlarged. It looks like this is damaged extrusion, and not the comptip luff track. OUCH

Naw, that's the plastic luff track. It's very shiny and the flash makes it look like AL in the photo.

Replacing the plastic comptip luff track is not that hard (the aluminum track is another story). Just be careful not to crack the fiberglass lip that holds the track on.

One thing though, I'm not sure how expensive a replacement track is, but I might try just cutting out the bad section of track (similar to the cut-out where you insert the sail in the aluminum extrusion). It doesn't look like it's a very long broken section. Use a dremel tool to cut out the bad section and file the area smooth. If the top of the mainsail bolt rope isn't frayed, it would probably slide right through.
