Fellow Hobie Sailors,
Would you be interested in a coaching session on race starts? I sent an e-mail to Nora at UCLA to find out if the MAC is available. **If everything is good with UCLA, which day are you available?** Youth sailors and friends are welcome.
DATE:
Which afternoon (12 PM - 4 PM) date is better for you - Sat, Oct 22 or Sat, Nov 5?
TOPIC and LOCATION:
For crew and skippers. In a classroom setting at the UCLA Marine Aquatic Center in Marina del Rey:
* Explain timing and flags of 3, 4 and 5 min starts
* Explain horns/whistles
* Practice looking at flags such as individual, general recall
* Dry run for looking at course number, counting down timing, watching for collisions
* Discuss what to do when boat stops in irons, gets tangled with boats or gets behind other boats
The water is cool and the wind is light. If there is enough wind, we would get on the water. Part of the UCLA rental includes equipment - wetsuits and lifejackets. There are locker rooms and hot showers. Bring a padlock if you would like to lock your valuables.
COST:
UCLA will charge between $5-$20 per person, depending on how long we rent the Hobie 16s for and how many people show up. Free parking is about 1/4 mile away or $7-$9 for parking at restaurants near UCLA MAC.
BRING:
Wear swimwear. Bring towel, change of clothes, sunblock, hat, sunglasses, notepad/pen.
Also, take along a pot luck item. Recommend a digital watch with count-up or count- down timer. (Timex Iron Man is relatively cheap and durable. You can get it at Savons and Rite Aid.)
