Post subject:  Leukemia Cup report

Here's the fleet 51 report for the Leukemia Cup. 23 boats participated. Highlights would be the solid 2 days of great S-SW breeze from 10AM thru the event with clear skies and 80 degree temperatures. 13-18 knots Saturday and 12-22 on Sunday at the RC boat. Basicly double trap survival both days with no let up. The A mark end of the legs had considerably more pressure and I would estimate the gusts at over 30. This is due to some wind sheer off the cliffs which flank that side of the lake. Unfortunately on Saturday, John Hauser was injured while righting his boat at A mark. While grabbing the dolphin striker during righting he apparently at least separated his shoulder and the hospital said possibly broke his clavical. He was in good spirits on Sunday morning and won the oldest T shirt award as well as the 'Lake Mead Assault Victim' award. On the other hand Mike Montague along with his crew, Tara Ames, simply dominated the event in 16A. Paul Boles also dominated the 16B class with a number of bullits. Newcomers to the Hobie 20 racing scene Greg Felich and crew Dan Hauserman won the 20 class in a hard fought battle with local favorites Tucker and Carolyn Barton. Notable stellar moments by Lake Mead locals would be the unlikely win during the first 16A race by Gordo and the fabulous last race win on Sunday by Rex Mitchell, coming from behind during the final downwind leg. Stoney Douglas jumped in with his skiff to help out with mark and chase with Rick and Barb Buchanan running a great RC. The Leukemia Cup was a resounding success because of both wind and participation. Notably, the Hobie Class and Fleet 51 members contibuted through their entries, dinner tickets and fundraising about 6000 dollars to the Leukemia Lymphoma Society and were well recognized by the Nevada Yacht Club for their efforts. Dave Martin was the top fundraiser with over half the amount raised. Expectations are to see an even bigger event next year. Thanks again to those who traveled far, which was instrumental to the success of the event.
