Thanks Chris for taking the time to make the measurements and post them. It seems as if your hulls are canted the same way at the bow and the stern wheras mine are twisted. Or at least the rudders are canted the opposite way from the bows. It's all very slight, so who knows what the effect is!

Thanks also Greg for your thoughts. It just so happens that we had Aaron Worrell and Mick Butler passing through town last weekend. When I put the question to them, they said that in their experience the new version of the Tiger rudders (which I have) are sometimes set too far forward under the transom, and this may be the problem as it makes the steering more sensitive. So before I move them even further forward by removing the neoprene, I'm going to have another go at raking them back, this time using cable ties for packers.

We are racing this weekend so I'll experiment with it then and see if it makes any difference.

Result from the weekend is that raking back only made the problem worse!

The next step is to move them forwards.

Another thing to look at is the rudders themselves. Warped, uneven foil shape or laminated ever so slightly off can create helm pull to one side. I recall an issue, from way back, where the left and right halves of some (maybe H20 blades) were laminated offset (one side slightly ahead of the other) created an asymmetrical foil and pull to one side consistently.

Try switching rudders port to starboard. If the problems switch, you have a bad foil/rudder.

Try it with the daggerboards too.

I had an old set of rudders on my 20 that never felt balanced. The two rudders were different lengths. Repaired beautifully by the prior owner, I never knew how different they were until I broke one blade. The new blade solved the problem.

One last shot, do the daggers slop around a bit in the trunk? Even a small amount of movement may cause a "tacking board" effect.

Hammond & Matt,

that's a very good suggestion! I'll try switching the rudders round and see if it makes any difference. This kind of "non destructive" experimenting is preferable to removing the pads.

The effect also happens when the daggers are removed, so it's nothing to do with the boards.

Rudders were brand new, fresh out of the box.... Kind of annoying really when my previous Tiger was perfect.

Try analyzing the foil shapes closely. They may need some work or replacement if the foils are asymmetrical.

I think your rudders are not ok, not symetrisch.
go to your dealer and ask to try other rudders.
we had the same problem in Holland.
The new build (beginning 2009) rudders are ok
