Post subject:  Have spinnaker shapes changed?
I have a five year old Tiger and have laid out the necessary funds for a new STX main and jib. I have inherited a spin with the boat that has had little use (only used twice) but is obivioulsy five years old. The question I have is "How has the shape of spins changed over the past few years and can I confidently use this one in competition ?

The short answer is "yes"

They have gotten flatter and shorter on the foot.

However, a 2004 vintage spin that's hardly ever been used will work just fine. Trust me, there are a lot of other things to worry about to get the boat up to speed (the nut on the tiller is the hardest one to get working right).

When that 2004 spin starts to show its age, you can replace it with a new one - and by that time, you'll be able to take advantage of its increased range (you can point higher with it).

Thanks MBounds - your comments re pointing have explained one thing to us in our recent state titles on a particular shy reach! You are dead right about the nut on the tiller - keeping this one on the boat is still a challenge sometimes. :D
