By now most of you would have heard the news the the Hobie Tiger took all three podium positions at last weekends Round Texel. For the full week story read on.

Texel Dutch Open

Sailed in the week leading up to the main event the Texel Dutch Open is open to all Catamarans and all positions are adjust by using the Texel Rating. The starting line consisted of Hobie Tigers, Nacra F18's, Fox's, Tornado's and other F18 and F20 boats.

To sail the event representing the Hobie Team were Darren Bundock with Will Howden and Gavin Colby with Cori Camenisch both sailing Hobie Cat Tigers under the F18 rule. Having arrived just the night before the event it was a mad scramble to rig the boats in time for the first race from a completely disassembled state.

The first days sailing saw perfect conditions with 15 knots of wind and 2m swell. In both the races Darren Bundock "Bundy" scored two firsts followed by Gavin and Cori with two seconds. Third in both the races was one of the Olympic Tornado teams representing Holland Sven Karsenburg and Mischa Heemskerk sailing a Tornado.

Day 2 saw the swell and the wind pick up slightly with a nasty shore break making leaving the beach difficult. The first race of the day was lead early by Bundy with Hugh Styles a close second and Gav and Cori an even closer third. But soon after a gybe the Aussie swiss combination stuck the bows hard into the back of a wave, which sent Cori round the bow and through the spinnaker. Not ideal for performance. This was then followed by a capsize and breaking of the trapeze shockcords. While they were cleaning up the mess Sven went on to win with the Tornado with Bundy second and Hugh third. Race 4 had again Sven first Bundy second and Gav third. Unfortunate for Hugh he was Black Flagged in the race which put him well behind overall as he already had scored a DNF on the first days sailing.

This year the Texel Dutch Open also included the main Round Texel Race as one heat of the round the buoys championship. A drop race was not available until 5 heats had been sailed and as the 3rd day of sailing was cancelled due to large surf and strong winds the points score had Bundy leading, Sven in second and a local dutch sailor in third. Gavin and Cori due to their DNF were placed in 10th position.

The 26th Round Texel

Near perfect conditions were forcast all week for the 26th edition of the Worlds Largest Catamaran Race. With nearly 600 entries, no rain and 15 knots of wind Saturday was shaping up to be a great race.

After negotiating our way through the sometimes up to 3m shore break many of the boats parked an hour in advance at the outer more favoured end of the startline. Starting wasnt easy as it was favoured on port and reaching. Up to 100 boats decided to take the starboard option and gybe when the gun went but however in the case the majority rulled and the 500 other boats coming on port, some under spinnaker took the right-of-way. Most of the fleet opted to two sail reach initially then set the spinnaker having reached a good angle to the light house and the first mark. However Gavin and Cori opted to sail with the spinnaker from the start line until they basically sailed to the beach and the breaking waves, then drop the spinnaker and two sail reach. This option proved right and they arrived to the first buoy in second overall lead only by the Marstom 20 of ex-Texel winner Gunnar Larsen.

Now the real race began. Having kept out of trouble at the start the Three Tiger's of Darren Bundock, Mitch Booth and Gavin Colby closely trailed the big boats and looked from the start to be the major contenders for the Texel Rating prize. Having sailed under spinnaker to the VC buoy the trio dropped the kites and headed up to reach up the other side of the island. With the boards up to avoid hitting the bottom the three teams lined up to sprint to the finish. All three teams closed back to the island a opted to take three different routes. Bundy the high road (close to the island), Mitch the middle road (halfway between Bundy and Gav) and Gavin the low road, further from the island but hopefully in more preasure. This is what decided the race.

After a short upwind the bottom of the island was reached and the last corner for home turned. Now two sail reaching again in 3m waves, which were sometimes breaking and trying to miss the submerged obstacles on the way. Conditions remained like this till the finish.

Bundy proved he is an all time guru and lead from the second gate to the finish closely followed by Mitch and then Gavin to win the F18 class.

Line honours went to Peter Vink on a Tornado who showed some impressive pace to pass Gunnar Larsen just before the finish. Bundy pushed the little Tiger into a brilliant third over the line ahead of many Tornado's, M20's and other larger boats.

The close finishing Tigers meant that they were the early favourites for the Texel Rating prize. And the presentations did not disapoint with a clean sweep for the Tiger Team..............1, 2 and 3 and many other Hobie boats finishing close behind to round up the top 10.

Bundy's win overall meant he secured the Texel Dutch Open win also followed by Sven and Mischa on the Tornado and Gav and Cori third.

It was a great week for the Hobie Cat Tiger.

Thanks has to be given to The Texel organisers, The people of Texel for their wonderful hospitality, Hobie Cat Holland, Hobie Cat Europe and all the friends we made this weekend. It was again one to remember.
