Can the tiger be sailed single handed? Cheers,

Post subject:  Sure it can!

No Prob, the spi has a snuffer making it really easy to launch by yourself. The jib is a roller furler too, so if its too windy you can sail as a uni rig!

The only trick, as you could imagine, is righting the boat. If you go out single handed have a heavy duty trashbag with you to be able fill with water and sling over your shoulder while leaning on the righting line should you need it for righting the boat.

I have single-handed my Tiger a bit and it is a gas to fly the hull alone with the spinnaker up. The first time you do it gets those rollercoaster butterflys in your stomach that we all know and love. :o

It's a blast! Last month there were 3 of us single handing (2 Tigers & 1 I20) out on a white capping Mission Bay, San Diego. I just installed foot straps a week prior and was glad I had them... -Dennis

Where did you put them? How did you install them? I have some old windsurfer straps I intend to use.

I put them on the rear crossbar. You can drill out the two rivets on each side that hold the end cap to the extrusion and replace them with self tapping screws and washers. The straps I purchased have fastening holes through the center of the webbing so it worked out perfectly. The only thing to watch out for is that the strap tends to pivot which is great when you put the boat away but not-so-great if you’re trying to put your foot in the strap out on the wire. As a result I ended up tying a line from one end of the webbing, down around the cross bar, to the other side of the webbing. This kept it from pivoting up and I didn’t have to drill any more holes in the boat.

I have two sets of footstraps on the boat. The first was put right behind the crossbar. I attached the front of them to the back of the rear crossbar and the back to the fiberglass behind. You have to make sure you clear your rudder arms to put this one one. Then we decided we wanted some further back. I installed the next pair at the transom of the boat. Actually the back of the strap is attached to the transom and the front is comfortable and attached to the deck of the hull. We use the back ones more often than the front ones. If we need them we really need them! Therefore get all the way back.
