[i]Happy New Year!!!!
To all Youth sailors and all Parents of Youth sailors:

This year we have a new approach for the 2008 Hobie season. We have established 4 events specifically designed for youth sailing of all ages and levels.
- Pot Holes Warm Up
- Youth Clinic
- Summer Celebration Youth Only
- Oktoberfest Youth Only
Parents - you hold the key to success for this plan, so please read on.

How many youth sailors do you think our Division has? 6? 10? Well with some very rough numbers based on my e-mail list - how about 40!!! Imagine 40 youths, of all ages, all skill levels on the water at a YOUTH ONLY event-with parents, and coaches as volunteers supporting the Youth events. The youths can sail on their own, do some exploring, make mistakes, without parental pressures, or get some sailing tips from the parents if they want. Make it fun – whatever their preferences are.

Pot Holes Warm Up - The first event will start April 4th-6th. A number of families are getting together at the Pot Holes State Park. While it’s going to be around 40 degrees where you are, Pot Holes will be around 70 degrees. In addition much warmer, pleasant weather, it has an expansive, beautiful lawn, great RV and tent camping. A number of the schools are on Spring Break at that time, so that's the reason behind the dates. We would like all families with youths, to come join us for a family weekend of sailing with the emphasis on the youths sailing and having a good time, instead of us adults hogging all the tiller time. Sail Sand Point has graciously agreed to provide us with 4 Hobie Waves. We will have other boats on the water as well for the youths to jump on and try out. It will be a totally informal family weekend - planned for the youths of all ages, and experience levels on the water.

Youth Clinic - May 10th will be a Youth Clinic at Sail Sand Point in Seattle, Washington. The format for this will be on the water coaching around buoys with friendly helpful hints. This is a one-day, informal, learning / fun event - no charge.
If the youths want to just sail around, that’s just dandy.

In addition, we’re going to be holding two YOUTH ONLY regattas. These two regattas will have fun sailing as well, so don’t think it’s all racing. The youth teams competing on the Hobie 16 will be scored based on their order of finish. This is going to be our method for determining the youth team that will represent our area in the US Sailing Youth Multi-hull Championships.

Summer Celebration Youth Event - July 26th and 27th is going to be a 2 day event held at Sail Sand Point Sailing Center in Seattle, Washington. We will have youths of all ages on the Hobie Waves, with potentially 20 Waves on the water hailing from as far away as Canada, Idaho, and Oregon and local sailors from Washington. In addition to the Hobie Waves, we will be racing on the Hobie 16 where point will be recorded toward the US Sailing Area L High Points youth champions.

Oktoberfest will be held at Sail Sand Point on September 27-28th. The Hobie 16 will once again be the platform for this regatta where points will be recorded toward the US Sailing Area L High Point youth champions. Yes – we know. How do you have an Oktoberfest in September. Let’s just all agree that its warmer in September and warmer is better!!!!

Thanks to Mike Hensel, with help from Don Atchley and Morgan Collins, we’ve lined up a number of learning / fun events for youths as well as a structured opportunities to identify our Area L youth champions.

The future is in the training and our youths. We hope that we can make this a friendly, fun, pressure-free atmosphere for the youths to explore the world of sailing. Many of the youths will become “cruisersâ€
