While we are sailing we are always referring to them based on the direction we are going from the last mark right?
when running down to a gate, we always start thinking of which way we want to go back up the course, assess the situation and make a decision to go to the "left" side or "right" side, never thought of refering to them as a port or starboard gate. We've predetermined, regarding side of course, we're always speaking in upwind terms

The RC always uses a fixed reference frame (looking upwind) when referring to marks on the course. Otherwise, directions to mark boats can be confusing. This is because mark boats will typically approach marks from downwind (they are always looking upwind).

Of course, competitors can use whatever frame they like, but if you ever go into a protest hearing, you're better off adopting the RC's frame of reference.
