Hey Guys,

In looking at the latest Hobie news I looked with interest at the 16's being weighed and wondered "How much does my '84 red line 16 weigh?" I am curious but not willing to build a tripod contraption to find out. (I have enough stuff I'm supposed to build and have not)

Do any of you know of a less extravagent way to weigh your boat? What does a 16 weigh platform and mast?

Thanks,

John

One bathroom scale under each hull should read ~160....

The official minimum weight is 320 lbs.

That includes everything for sailing except what you wear on your body (PFD, trap harness).

The rig in Syracuse was about as accurate as you could get. They rented the load cell w/digital readout and everything else came from Jim Perkins who uses the stuff in his construction business. Painting it Heineken green was a nice touch.

Anyway, the key to using bathroom scales is having the whole thing on a flat, level surface - like a concrete driveway or a parking lot. Put squares of plywood under the scales to make sure the weight is distributed evenly.

Even so, by using two scales, you double the error - if each scale is +/- 1 lb, the total error is +/- 2 lbs.

Bathroom scales were used at the Mega. No one seemed to object.

Yeah, I know - I was part of the crew helping to weigh boats there.

We only had one boat that came up light - but then again, we were weighing mostly 17's, 18's and 20's.

16's are much more sensitive to weight and/or more likely to be light.
