Post subject:  examining wear/ pitting on MAST for H16

After 9 yrs setting, the boat is underway in "refurbish" for recreational. now, nearly completely updated and days from ready... we know how to sail them, fairly hard, and prefer the smaller surf, mid-gulf coast. all is well so far, but-
there are (4) four little pitting areas on the mast...on the side, not the lead edge- up about 4' from the luff slide- opening. these are 4 SEPARATE but closely spaced areas -from 3/16" up to almost 1/2" across, egg-shaped wounds, stretching out about / across four inches..they appear to be some-what "decayed" to a depth equal to HALF the wall thickness of the mast. I believe they were caused by the mast laying in the foward cradle over the yrs...
SO- Am i asking for trouble sailing it, or do we go for it. i have a feeling that if it is going to fail, i can predict where. but..... any engineers and sailors that know of the condition or have seen it, chime in and give thoughts, please- I am not going to object spending for a used good- condition mast, if we can find one within the 150- 200 mi range.... thanks!!! h sailor in CC
