This year's US Sailing Youth Nationals is to be held late March/early April. The event date is being pushed by Art Stevens of US Sailing. This date was choosen not out of concern for the youth sailors, but because it allows the used boats supplied at the event to be sold early in the sailing season. All the other US Sailing Youth National events for monohulls are held in early Summer.
In addition to this strange date, the boat choosen is the SL 16, a boat that doesn't exist outside of some modified SL 15.5 boats in Europe. The event orgainizer, Art Stevens, US sailings youth coordinator, single handedly decided on this boat for the event when the Hobie 16 with spinnaker was also an option. The Youth Multihull Worlds will be held in 2007 on Hobie 16s with spinnaker. Why the 2007 nationals is on a different boat? Only Art knows. The youth sailors will not only need to commit to the short dated national event in less than four months, but will have to miss school to do so on a boat none of them has ever sailed in the US.
Please write a letter to US Sailing to find out why the youth multihull nationals are being pushed at a date that is bad for the sailors on a boat that does not yet exist in the US. Multihull Sailing in the US has enough challenges without these kind of nonsense decisions.
PS- the event venue and site orgainizers are not the issue. From what I understand, ABYC, to date, is the site with help from Dan Delave. Stepping up to help last minute is great, but the cause of this scramble is nuts.
