What is the best way to figure out if you are going to make the mark upwind and downwind when racing? I used to think it was 90 degrees off the rear beam but given the fact that I understood almost every layline at the Madcatter last weekend, I think my gauge is way off. I race the 16 solo ( I'm a tall and kinda heavy guy) so I've got to call the laylines myself , so there's no one else to blame I guess! Let me know how you guys do it, so I can become a slightly less aweful racer! thanks! |

I've always looked over my rear shoulder (sitting with my body facing the leeward side). If I can see the mark, then I'm in the ballpark. Madcatter required a little bit more because of the lumps (especially Sunday). |

Hi Blair - thanks again for coming to MC34. Another thing to do is look at the other boats, (assuming you're not 1st), pick one with a good line and tack on that line, or slightly above. Also - if you find you've "understood" the line - got as fast as you can - resist pointing to make it - you'll need to tack again but you'll be closer to the mark and it's easier to call. I found most people over-standing the starboard lay-line on Saturday in the windier races (races 3 & 4). I sight the front crossbar by the way - It's usually a good indicator - never sighted the rear but that's cause I have crew I guess. I like Matt's Rear shoulder idea - too. Rico |

On the 16, if you think you're there you're not, go about another 10 boatlengths and then you'll be in the ballpark. |
