Just returned frojm Walker Mn,where they hosted the 39 th anual Leech Lake Regatta. It is a three day event on the biggest lake in MN.The eveny consisted of distance and triangle courses. It is open to all boats and had 7 different starts for the flleets.Flleet 7 consisted of the multihull class, made up of 5 hobie 16's,2 hobie 17's,an 18 a 20 and a nacra 5.5 and three Cosair tris.Three days of winds that probably averaged 20 knts with gusts in the low 30's.The racing courses took us over 20 miles of the lake in 4-6 foot waves. In these conditions the Hobies just dominated. We started almost an hour behind some boats and ended up finishing in some cases an hour ahead of them.Lots of breakdowns in the keel boat class ranging from broken masts, rudders and torn sails. Not one breakdown on any of the Hobies. Many of the young sailors crewing on the mono slugs were envious of the speed of the cats as we flew by them.Great event if any one wants something different then windward leeward couse. http://www.shoresofleechlake.com/regatta.htm

Great fun,but serious hard work.In 20+ knts Ted Jagger is in his element, especially upwind. When Ted gets his 6'-4" frame on the wire he is hard to beat.He is the only Cat that went all three days without flipping. We had a perfect record untill the last upwind leg on the last day when leading untill I was washed off the boat.
This was without a doubt the most intense sailing I have ever done.It was the gusty conditions and big (4'-6') that caused the biggest challenge. My Daughter is now in love with sailiing in that stuff.Funny thing was the last day it was blowing just as hard but it felt a whole lot easier. In fact we stayed out after the last race for about an extra hr. of practice. The whole event was first class, concluding with a banquet at the end that had enough food to cover the entry cost of $75.

Yes I think Leech Lake Regatta could be the be the premier distance event for Cats on an inland lake. How many other places can you go and set up a 35 mile course with Coast Guard support boats.BTW the Coast Guard did a fantastic job, within 2min. of flipping they had a support boat avaliable.
As far as the 20 NAC that is a very generous offer, thank you.
