My old boat would never be competitive, but if I decided to enter a race for fun, I would like to know my modifications are legal. Where can I find a set of the rules I need to abide by?

Before I worried about it to much... Check with the local fleet you plan on racing with, they will be happy to here from you and eager to help. If your boat isn't carrying Hobie sails, you pop a chute (assuming USA).... something like that, you might be protested at a Hobie sanctioned event. I don't know if I would sweat the small stuff though, there are lots of different possibilities for exceptions. Most fleets want boats on the line, and will work hard for you to make it happen.

I'm wondering about things like my rigged downhaul, reconfigured low-pro 5:1 sea ways, rewelded pylons, etc.

Its probably all in there in some way or another. Sounds like you may have some specific questions that you may need to ask the forum.

6:1 blocks are fine.. even if you built them yourself. 5:1 is fine also...

The downhaul can't be more than 6:1... the cleat must be on the lower block and fixed so it can't be adjusted from the wire.

You have only done things to drag your old boat into the 21st century. Hobie fleets are desperate for new blood. You will not be a threat and they should give you plenty of time to correct anything that is wrong.

Just go and have a Hobie Day. They will let you know when you need to "fix" things. If it is a hot racing fleet, you will be lucky to finish in the same zip code as the leaders.

With one exception. Even in areas with smaller fleets I dunno if 'desperate' is the right word...... They often need some fresh ideas.. but I don't think desperation is something they are feeling.. even if they should... :lol: :x

Good to know. I have scavenged yet a 3rd Hobie 16 that will sacrifice its life to make one good boat. So far my boat is a combination of a 70, 77 and a 89 (and possibly an 86). Looking forward to getting active and learning some things.
