Just a thought, but I just came back from a two day event and am pretty exhausted.I keep myself in good shape. In talking with a few of the other racers my age(40+) the general consences was that a five day nationals is too much. Most agreed that after 7 races the standings change very little.Three day event with one lay day to be used if you missed one day would seem to me to be the ideal.I think as the racing population is aging a five day event is more of a deterent then an attraction. As stated earlier just a thought feel free to bash away

I don't see how just seven races can suffice to crown a National champion. Best case would be all different variations of wind and water conditions...you need all the conditions. Some maturity may shine in the light stuff and chances are one day of five will be lost due to weather conditions giving you a free day of rest. Make sure you stomp around the younger crews, bitching about not being able to sail.

Try two aspirin defore bed time

Come on man, don't give those whipersnappers a hint that you've lost one step!!!

On your side...have you thought about lobbying hard for a seniors competition at the National level. Could be run concurrent with the youth and women's.

:D We need to keep the existing format. Edurance is part of the regatta. At my last North American's, Monterey, CA, most of us did the Otter Regatta for the warm up, then the next five days in the North American's.

Was all set to go to San Francisco last year, when my knee locked up, requiring surgery. Now back on the boat, H-17, looking forward to the possible North Americans at Harrison Lake, Canada in 2008.

As far as a separate event for Seniors, not necessary. Might consider separate scores, but we all need to sail together.

Caleb Tarleton
BTW, 70 last year, and far from the oldest H-17 sailor

The current five-day format emerged from the days when Hobie Cat supplied boats. The same format is still used at the worlds, where there are supplied boats.

There was usually a 3 day (Fri-Sun) lead-in event, most often the Women's. Otherwise, the leading weekend was used for travel.

The first three days were a round-robin with boat rotations between every race. There was a party on Wed night where the fleet was cut in half (the Wed night gala at most events is still called the "Cut Party" for this reason).

The final two days, the leading half of the fleet raced, the back half got to sightsee. The trailing weekend was reserved for travel.

The format is still used, even though Hobie hasn't provided boats since 1989 (2005 being an exception).

Is it physically demanding? You betcha. However, at the 17 North Americans in San Francisco Bay, the average wind was 15+ knots and the average age was 56! Despite that, there was more attrition from broken boats than broken sailors. I think after the second day, you kind of hit a groove where the post-race physical discomfort just doesn't get any worse. Of course, NSAIDs (like Advil) are in high demand.

I've done 8 days straight (14s followed by 16s in Syracuse) and last year I did a weekend regatta on the way home from the 16s. I'm 47 and far from being in shape. Yeah, I was tired, but I learned a lot, had a lot of fun and I even was awarded a can of "Road Kill Stew" for being a total road warrior by the folks at Canandaigua Yacht Club.

In another week, I'll be on the road to compete for 3 days (14's), run race committee for 5 days (17s and 18s) then home, only to turn around in 7 hours to go run race committee for another 4 days (NACRA F17 North Americans). Three days later, I'll head back to NY (6 hour drive) to do a weekend event with my wife on the 16.

You're younger and more in shape than I am, Madge! Quit yer bitchin! :D

Hahahahaha!!! You're killing me Madge!! You are more full of piss and vinager than most 25 year olds!! And in better shape than most of them too......
We're doing 5 days when you come to Clear Lake next year so you better get your ass on a treadmill and start drinking your energy drinks. Maybe you should play something other than goalie this winter to get in shape!
You're the BEST Madge, you crack me up!

I guess you guys were only 2 boats away from a points regatta at Green Lake. Slim said it was good, said you were a true competitor and had a good time.
See if you can come to Clear Lake this Sept, we're having a Luau, lu..llu jeez, I can't spell it. We're having a friggin' Hawiian Party with a roast pig and everything!
Xander is pretty pumped. He's got his game face on already, Jake Larson too. Both of them have great crew and hopefully will do well. Wish your kid was there too, but we'll see him at the Youths NEXT year in Clear Lake without excuse.
