Post subject:  I broke the the mainsheet block/cleat cable

the one that goes from the top rudder pin

it snapped clean off where it goes into the threaded connector at the block
a guy at a kayak place tied the block to the rudder pin connector with some spectra line but just temporarily

do I need to buy a new cable?
it looks like it might be hard to get out of the block

or can I somehow get the remaining cable out of the connector and then crimp the existing cable back in?

thanks!

Steve,

Sounds like you have the older block/cable assembly (like me). the newer ones attach to the top of the rudder housing. On mine, there is a fitting clamped (or welded, I never really looked) to the end of the cable. The block has a clevis pin that sticks out, and fits inside of the cable end fitting. The two are held together with a cotter pin.

Seems like you are going to need a new cable.

Yours sounds a little different, how about a picture.

The cable is replaceable (p/n HC 90700011 - $28.25)... I just can't remember how it's removed from the lower block. I'll try to remember to take a look when I get to the shop.

If it snapped, then it was probably a wire failure from being kinked. Reusing the fitting in the block might be possible if the wire pulled out, but it takes a pretty serious swaging machine to do those fittings. Vicegrips won't get the job done.

Thanks guys!

yup it's the older style cable that comes out of the lower block, it looks like I may have to take the block apart to get the fitting out of the block housing

it's weird, it's not frayed or anything, it looks like it was cut cleanly right flush where it enters the fitting, the end of the cable is still in the fitting so I don't think I'd be able to reuse it

and I'm going sailing in the morning :P

think I could leave it tied together with that thin spectra line for tomorow or should I use something like little carabiner

thanks for your help!

The Spectra line is incredibly strong, so if you have something as small as 1/8" it should hold the modest load of a Bravo just fine. The problem will be the block flopping around during tacks and jibes. And chafe could be an issue.

I thought we had one of the cables sitting here, but we sold it last week. So I can't eyeball how it might work. Sorry....

Hey Brad, you got any old Bravos sitting around at Sunjammers?

hey thanks again!

a kayak dealer tied the block to the clevis that goes on the rudder pin

it worked for the day
if you guys locate a cable let me know

I'm sure it cost at least that to get it repaired and the marina... might as well get a new one

thanks man!

Your local dealer should be able to order one for you. If he's anywhere close to as busy as we are, he probably orders parts every week, so the lead time shouldn't be too bad.

I'm about to place the 2nd order for us this week.

It's all Matt's fault. He keeps changing stuff.

Steve,

Another item you should check on your boat is the lower front section of the "A" frame. It was discussed in an earlier post with a title "Warning Design Flaw" Heres the link:

Check to see if you have the older or newer post.

sorry I'm so late on this one we've been slammed as well.
I think most dealers are like us and mariner, ordering weekly, if not twice.
I do not have any old bravo's laying around, i can't even keep new ones in the warehouse!

Bravo's I got... Getaways are another story. And now Jeremy is trying to talk me out of a port 20 hull.

Hey Jeremy, I left him a note but you should still call Aris after lunch (Dallas time) about that hull. I still don't have the full story, other than we have what is supposed to be a brand new port 20 hull in a box in the warehouse. Pretty sure that one is going to a customer who got t-boned at Nationals. It's a long story, I'm sure....

Sure looking forward to winter so that I can get some sailing in.

We're good on cats at the moment... At least I hope we are. Yaks are another story.

I kind of wish we had another Getaway. But Matt (it's always his fault) is short on crossbars, and I'm still trying to sort thru a pile of stuff we got from a closed "Sailing Supply" store in St Pete. Lord All Mighty... My warehouse is a pig sty at the moment. Anyone need a 50 lb Bruce anchor for their cat?

But that last Getaway we got shot out of here. Sold at 24 hours after arrival, delivered at 36. Had to let the mast cure after all. I think that's a record for us.

It's just too hot here at the moment to think about building cats.

Thanks Charlie

I read that thread, but I'm not sure how you would go about checking it
the corrosion would be on the inside... right?

thanks again!

Its the forward A frame post, just in front of the Mast. Take a look at the bottom and see if there are 4 or 2 pop rivets holding in the screw assembly. The issue is the number of rivets. The 2 rivet post is OK, the 4 rivet post has the problem. By drilling and inserting 4 rivets, to much of the material was removed making it weaker.
