I am wondering if it is recommended to remove the battens before furling the sail during winter. Obviously it is important to loosen the downhaul, but should the battens be removed?

Fiberglass is pretty good at not retaining a shape after being bent. However, since they will be wrapped around the mast for several months and becasue it is so easy to do, I'd say "Yes", remove them.

I just lightly tied them to my mast so I wouldn't lose them.

I take my sail off the mast and remove the battens. I then fold it sail and store it in the sail bag that came with it. I keep the sail in the basement so it never is exposed to the cold.

Just curious. Are you not concerned about furthering creases via folding?

What I do, simply beacause I have the room, remove it from the mast, remove the battens and hang it until I feel good it is fully dry, wrap it back around the mast again without the battens, place it in the sail bag that covers the length of the mast and hang the mast on some padded wooden braces I added to my existing wooden, kayak wall rack in my garage. I very lightly bungee the battens to the covered mast/sail just so I don't lose them.

Believe it or not, my simple wooden rack now hold two sea kayaks, the Hobie Mast and two bicycles.

Edit: Actually not all three together. My kayaks get strapped up out of the ay via ceiling hooks this time of year, freeing up room to hang the bycles on it for the winter.

Didn't think about the creases. I just figured Hobie supplied the bag for a reason.

I really only sail it about 1 week a year and have to transport the boat 500 miles. I don't like having the mast together for that long of a drive. Too much bouncing. THe sail looks like new every time I pull it out!
