Post subject:  Winter Hull Storage

Hi there,

I have a Bravo witch i just got this year and am looking for ways to store it. I have a loft in my attached two car garage with is kept fairly warm in the winter. My builder is going to be putting pulleys to pull the boat up upside down under the loft. If that doesn't make sense, it will be hanging under the loft via a pulley system.

Just wondering what your thoughts are on this.

Thanks
Sailer :D

With some wide straps to keep the PSI distribution spread out, I would feel very comfortable hanging mine. I hang both a fiberglass and a 'tupperware' sea kayak every winter this way and have never had any hull distortion using two 3" straps per boat. I used to use 4" straps but found that the 3" ones actually conformed to the hull shape better.

However, maybe someone else can chime in about the upside down concept. I say that only because obviously the bottom of the hulls are designed to support the boats weight and would happily take much of the weight when strapped (although it would be spread out some up the hulls via the straps). Upside down, the weight will be on less sturdy sections of the hull but considering the boat is pretty much designed to get sat on and walked over pretty much everywhere, this may not be a concern.

Real experts should be along shortly.

Inside, outside....it does not really matter as long as the Hobie is dry...

For winter storage over the years, we have parked our H18's outside, in temps as low as -40....
However, we make 110% certain that the drain plugs are out and that there is no moisture inside the hulls,
and we 'air-vent' the hulls via the port holes with 5" tubing...
Search the Forum for 'winter storage'...
and pm me if you like for pictures...one day I'll learn how to post.

At our latitude, UV is not much of a problem.
Just to be safe, I tie down a tarpaulin over the whole boat.
