| Post subject: | 21SC Mast rake angle and forestay tension |
I was wondering if anyone knew the correct mast rake angle for the 21SC? I was also wondering if the jib halyard is supposed to take tension off of the forestay? Any information would be appreciated, thanks. |

From what I have read, the more rake (or less, I do not really recall) lets you point higher; the other way it affords you more speed. I have my SC somewhere in the middle. Forestay and halyard; I would say you do not want to have the halyard holding the mast up. I usually tension the main sheet to pull on the topping lift before I tension the jib halyard. there is reading material on the web regarding mast rake, but the articles I found a few years ago referred to the H16 most of all, but I guess the principle is the same. Agreed. It's the same system that's used on the 18 (as well as all other furling Hobie jibs). Hoist the end of he boom up using the main halyard. Then pull in the main sheet blocks to pre-tension the forestay. Then hoist the jib and set the jib halyard tension. If you don't pre-tension the forestay, you will stretch the heck out of the jib luff or break the wire halyard when you sheet in the mainsail - the load needs to be supported by the forestay. sm |
